ON THE COVER:
The USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) is the first ship of the three-ship Zumwalt-class of guided missile destroyers that were to provide fire support for ground forces along with normal destroyer missions. As with most current Navy ships, the class has been plagued with problems. The main guns for the ship were a pair of Advanced Gun Systems (AGS) 6.1-inch weapons but the Navy cancelled the ammunition procurement program for the weapon as the cost spiraled out of control to $1 million per round and this was the only type of ammunition the weapon could utilize. This means the AGS cannot provide naval gunfire support and the class has been repurposed for surface warfare. The Zumwalt-class was originally to consist of 32 ships but this has now been cut to just three and the program, unfortunately, has to be branded a failure. (USN)
