ON THE COVER:
Type IXC/40 U-Boat U-858 was photographed entering Cape Henlopen, Delaware, during May 1945 after being surrendered at sea. Lieutenant Commander Willard D. Michael, officer in charge, is seen in the tower holding a megaphone while overhead is a K-class airship and a Sikorsky HNS 1 helicopter. Launched on 30 September 1943, U-858 undertook three war patrols under the command of Kapitanleutnant Thilo Bode. On 14 May, Bode surrendered the U-Boat and she became the first German warship to surrender to American forces. She was used for War Bond drives before being scuttled by the Navy at the end of 1947.
